I have bought hamsters from a pet shop and am not sure it was a good idea?

Question by aunty_ames: I have bought hamsters from a pet shop and am not sure it was a good idea?
I have had one hamster die from diarrhoea, had them replaced and now one of them seems to be ill again! What am i supposed to do? I have only had them less a week and i dont want to pay out fortunes on vet bills. Is there anything i can give them to make them better? It is getting stupid, i thought having a pet was a good idea, now im not so sure but they are so cute!

Getting a pet is a great idea. Getting one from a pet store is a very bad idea. Chances are, every hamster in that store is sick. I wouldn’t be surprised if every rodent in that store is sick.

I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this. It really sucks to have a pet just to have it get sick. Without taking it to the vet though, I don’t know what can be done for your little guy. I hope your next experience with pets is better than this one is.

Is it a good idea to breed hamsters? I know everything about breeding them such as dont touch the babies, dont disturn the mother and that u dont have to clean the cage for awhile. I just have two questions, Who has less babies, Syrian or Dwarf? And my other question is, Is breeding a good idea?? I wanna do it!

no its not a good idea to breed hamster there are so many at shelter that need a home unless your keeping the babies its a bad idea.

I have a small house, but intend to keep my hamster in my room. I would build a little playground for him to get his excersize, and I am fully capable of taking care of the hamster. But I have a few roadbumb questions:
- Are hamsters very smelly, loud, or aggresive?
- Will it do fine shut in my room when I’m at school?
- DO hamsters require a big cage?
- And finally, do they cost alot to care for?

Oh, and does anyone have a good hamster care website? This, aside from my fish, would be my first (onmyown) pet.

Get a wire cage. A determined hamster can chew its way out of a plastic cage, like a Habitrail, overnight. IMO Habitrails are good only for mice.

i would recommend a two level one… they love climbing. and its a must to have a wheel in it. So try finding a cage with a wheel in it. A cool cage for hamsters is one of those that have tubes and stuff going around… that would be their favorite cage if you get one.

I am getting a Teddy Bear Hamster soon (long haird Syrian) , and i would keep it in my room , but in the summer it can get really hot in there without the air condition on , how hot is TO hot for hamsters , and how cold is TO cold ?

Please give temperatures in Farenheight please !

soo i used to have m y hamie in my room but at summer i move it to a cooler place in the shade.

long hairs will need warm things for cold as for short hair they need more, but for long hairs in summer u should change water regualy and put food, and soo on……..

its the same just make sure it doesnt get over like eh…..24*C kk
