Important Information About the Chinese Dwarf Hamster
By: Mary Wilbur
Posted: Apr 11, 2011
The Chinese dwarf hamster comes from the deserts of Norther China and Mongolia. They are very different from other hamster breed because of behavior and coloration. They are sometimes called the rat-like hamster. If you know how to care for them, they can be a lot of fun to own as a pet.
The life span of the Chinese dwarf hamsters is usually 2-3 years. They have a longer body which measure approximately 10-12cm. An interesting fact associated with the Chinese dwarf hamster is that the females are more powerful and larger in size than the males. The Chinese hamsters, unlike the other hamsters have a long tail of 3cm. They have a body color that is grey and brown. All Chinese hamsters have a black strip running down their spine, a white base and a spot on the head. They are one of the more beautiful of all hamster species.
The Chinese dwarf hamsters can never get along in pairs, contrary common belief. Instead, two female Chinese dwarf hamsters, when introduced at an early age, will have a greater chance to become fiends than a male and a female Chinese hamster. Another striking fact about the Chinese hamster is that the female is more dominant than the male. As a result, the females will sometimes harm the male dwarf hamsters and leave them injured or dead. That being another reason to be careful when pairing two of these hamsters together.

Chinese Dwarf Hamsters in Brief
If you are interested in housing a Chinese dwarf hamster, then there are certain things you need to keep in mind. Chinese dwarf hamsters need a lot of space for themselves to execute various kinds of activities. A place having more than one level and lots of hiding places is preferable. Also, Chinese hamsters are very active and often good at escaping. Because of this they may look for opportunities to escape from their cage. Keeping this in mind, you should get a plastic or glass aquarium type cage rather than a bar cage. It is very likely that they will try to escape through the bars of the cage. Or, they you run the risk of them being stuck in between the bars. Either way, you have a loose hamster, or a stuck hamster. So, avoid bar cages.
A balanced diet including such things as seeds, pellets, fruits, vegetables, and wheat bread. Give these foods regularly and often. You also need to supply them with fresh drinking water. To ensure essential care, most people suggest daily water cleaning.
Although they have a life span of 2-3 years, they cannot be trained. They are very lively and active. Because of these activities, they indulge themselves in, it’s hard to train them to do something different. They are skilled at jumping, climbing, running, and hiding. If you’re interested in an easy pet to own, these may not be the best idea of you. However, if you’d like a pet that’s fun to watch and is very active, this would be a great fit.

1 Hamsters, one of America’s most popular pets, are members of the rodent family. These little furry creatures have been a favorite pet of countless children over the years. Hamster comes from a German word that means loosely to hoard, which is exactly what rodents like to do most. Hamsters are by nature nocturnal creatures. If you have one that shares a room with you, there’s no doubt you have awoken many times to the sound of a hamster wheel going at full speed. This nocturnal instinct also carries over to their eating habits. It’s best to give them something to snack on just before you retire for the night so they’ll have the energy to get a full night of exercise. Hamsters are not overly picky when it comes to eating. The best choice however is a quality hamster food designed especially for the species. A good mix will contain a variety of seeds and grains such as cracked wheat. In nature, hamsters and other rodents feed mainly on these types of things so it makes sense to continue the diet in captivity. Just because hamsters eat mainly seeds and grains doesn’t mean they’re not willing to feast on other high protein sources. Nuts and even the occasional piece of meat or cheese will not harm the animal and will spice up their diet. Just make sure that these foods are the exception rather than the rule and make hamster food the main staple. Many of the hamster foods on the market today are supplemented with fruits and vegetables such as carrots, raisins, apples and other common plants. Any new food should be introduced slowly in very small portions to make sure the animal can handle it. Remember, a hamster is very small and even a tiny amount of the wrong food can harm or even kill them. If you supplement with fresh fruit and vegetables, make sure the food is washed first to remove pesticides Life in a cage can get boring and every hamster enjoys a fun game to break the monotony. One of their favorites is hide the treat. Take the animal out of the cage and bury treat in various spots around the cage. This will occupy the hamster and stimulate their natural instinct to forage for food. Remember where you placed the treats and make sure the hamster either eats them or they are removed the next day in order to avoid food borne contamination of the cage. Be careful to not over feed the hamster. A hamster will eat long after its full, not knowing when the next meal will come. This can quickly lead to an obese hamster and no one wants that. On the other hand, if your hamster eats too many treats and becomes too picky to eat his normal food, back off the treats until he begins to eat normally again. Hamsters don’t require a lot of water, but a fresh supply should always be on hand. Change the water daily to avoid fecal contamination. Collin is a trainer and pet enthusiast. Question by Alexis: What to do about mating hamsters? Best answer: Answer by Emily Kelly Know better? Leave your own answer in the comments!
Siberian dwarf hamsters have huge eyes with a body just about 4 inches long. They are known to be “possessive” with their mates. The bond between “couple” is so tight that separation can cause depression. As a result, the male dwarf hamster may become inactive. Their behavior is quite similar to humans that they are sometimes used to study human depression problems. These nocturnal animals are very sociable that they can be kept in groups. It is however not advisable to put mature males in one cage as they would fight. The most common reason for their ‘misbehavior” is that they want to keep the females all to themselves. If we try to compare the male Siberian dwarf hamster to the other breeds, the former is the slowest and tends to be sluggish. The life span of the Siberian dwarf hamster is around 1.5 to 2 years. But this can vary depending on the care it receives as well as the nutrition. At the age of 1, they are considered to be old and may begin to show signs of aging. So physical activities during this time should be kept at a minimum. If you’re planning of breeding these furry creatures, bear in mind that you look for an escape-proof home. Due to their size, they can fit through even the smallest spaces in cages. A baby hamster might disappear unnoticed. This is the reason why they are also called escape artists. An aquarium is the best home for Siberian dwarf hamsters. You would also need to put some bedding at the bottom of the aquarium. Old paper would do. It’s also a must to clean the cage weekly to avoid ammonia build-up from urine. But do not, in any way, touch the cage if one of your Siberian dwarf hamsters just gave birth. This will stress the mother and aside from abandoning her pups, there’s also a big chance she might eat them all up. http://siberiandwarfhamsters.com/ Question by Care O: What do consistent dreams about hamsters indicate? I have recurring dreams involving hamsters every so often. Its not always the same scenario, sometimes they get lost, sometimes theyre found, sometimes I just buy them a new cage, sometimes 1 dies, sometimes they fight, sometimes I just hold them etc. All different story lines but hamsters are involved. I dont own any hamsters and havent in years.
They could be metaphorical representations of your loved ones. Maybe a relationship dies, so a hamster dies. Maybe something good happens so they get a new cage. Maybe you find a new friend so you get a new hamster <3![]()

I love hamsters! I would like some back up on why Winter White Hamsters are the best type of hamsters.
Who is to say they are the best type of hamster? I don’t prefer them over other hamsters and like them equally. This is more of a personal opinion of yours, so simply take the time to think why it is you like them the best.![]()
