Zhuzhu Pets: Do Fake Pets Have Anything Real to Offer?
My first pet was a gerbil I got when I was eight years old. I begged and begged for the little guy, and finally my parents gave in. Of course, like most kids, I got my initial thrill, and then the novelty started to wear off. But the responsibility didn’t, and I had to keep taking care of the gerbil for several years to come.
One night the little guy got accidentaly crushed in a door. I used to let him run around for exercise, and he was on one of those runs when my sister opened the door and he got squeezed between the frame and the door. Blood was pouring out of his nose, and his legs looked broken. Mom helped me patch him up as best we could, and then it was a long night of waiting. Mom brought a hot water bottle and we covered it in a towel and put it next to where he was sleeping. I remember crying with Mom as we watched over his little body.
Miracleously, he survived, and went on to live for many years. But I never forgot that harrowing night. It was my first experience of watching helplessly while something — or someone — struggled to survive. I learned something that night. A hard lesson for an eight year old, but a good education nonetheless.

A few years ago my wife brought home a hamster that belonged to one of her client’s children. The kid had grown bored of the hamster, and the poor thing sat completely neglected on a shelf in his room. If it wasn’t for his mother coming in to feed it, it would have died and he would not have known the difference. My wife and I looked after that little guy for almost 3 years, until he died at a ripe old age. I was surprised to find myself nearly as saddened by the loss as I had been when my first gerbil died when I was a kid.
Zhuzhu pets are fake hamsters, that look and act like the real thing, but are actually electronic toys. Now, the attraction for many parents might be obvious; no muss, no fuss, and a nearly real experience of looking after a pet. But I see it as another step in the direction of losing all real experience for children.
A Zhuzhu pet is nothing more than an animated teddy bear. If parents are looking for a real learning experience for their child, then the responsibility of looking after a pet is a mighty good one. Forget to feed and water a real hamster, neglect it and don’t give it any attention, and you are in for one hard lesson. Knowing that it is one day going to die, and your child is learning a true lesson in life.
Of course zhuzhu pets and other such toys have their place in a child’s life, especially for the very young. But they aren’t going to teach kids anything about responsibility or the realities of life and death. For that, you might want to think about getting a real hamster.

How do winter white hamsters live in the wild?
Question by geckogirl46: How do winter white hamsters live in the wild?
Do they live alone or in groups? Is it normal for them to live with others?
Best answer:
Answer by CountryGirl
Winter Whites [Siberian]. These hamsters live in Siberia. They live on flat land with short grass. There are not many people and these hamsters are not afraid of humans. In snow, they can change their fur color to white so that they blend in better. The female will live with two males in a burrow and the males will help with the babies.
Hamsters live in burrows that are like underground tunnels. The tunnels can be very large and have many rooms. One room is used for sleep, one to store food, and another to stay in for a short time. Sometimes these tunnels are over 11 yards long. They will cover the entrance with a stone. Burrows might have more than one entrance.
Scientists disagree whether wild hamsters really hibernate. They like to be in 65-80 degree Fahrenheit temperatures. When the temperature goes below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, they go into a temporary hibernation, or torpor. With torpor, their body temperatures drop lower, their heart rate drops to 5-15 beats a minute [instead of 250-500], and they sleep for long periods of time. Another sign of torpor is that hamsters will wake up every week or so. They will stay awake for about eight hours, eat, drink, and then go back to sleep. The difference between hibernation and torpor is how long the sleep times are and how much the animal’s bodies slow down. Most of our sources said that wild hamsters go into torpor like bears and are not true hibernators.

I have bought hamsters from a pet shop and am not sure it was a good idea?
Question by aunty_ames: I have bought hamsters from a pet shop and am not sure it was a good idea?
I have had one hamster die from diarrhoea, had them replaced and now one of them seems to be ill again! What am i supposed to do? I have only had them less a week and i dont want to pay out fortunes on vet bills. Is there anything i can give them to make them better? It is getting stupid, i thought having a pet was a good idea, now im not so sure but they are so cute!

Getting a pet is a great idea. Getting one from a pet store is a very bad idea. Chances are, every hamster in that store is sick. I wouldn’t be surprised if every rodent in that store is sick.
I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this. It really sucks to have a pet just to have it get sick. Without taking it to the vet though, I don’t know what can be done for your little guy. I hope your next experience with pets is better than this one is.

Can I keep 2 teddy bear hamsters (long-haired syrians) in the same cage together?
Question by neverbroken83: Can I keep 2 teddy bear hamsters (long-haired syrians) in the same cage together?
I just got 2 baby teddy bear hamsters for my daughters. The hamsters are from the same litter, and both are female and not quite 6 weeks old yet. They’re currently sharing a cage, and get along fine. Is it ok for them to continue sharing a cage or do they each need their own? If I need 2 separate cages, at what age should I seperate the hamsters? Thanks!

Since they are females they are fine together.

Why do pet shops sell 2 hamsters together to put in the same cage when hamsters fight when together?
Question by Raven: Why do pet shops sell 2 hamsters together to put in the same cage when hamsters fight when together?
I see this a lot in different pet stores they sell 2 hamsters for like a 10 gallon tank and don’t tell the people that hamsters fight and they will need another cage? Thanks
Best answer:
Answer by me!
because they probably just want a better profit, and if the hamsters fight then it’s usually not much of a concern to them unfortunately :(

will my two male teddy bear hamsters end up fighting in adult hood?
Question by loading…please wait…: will my two male teddy bear hamsters end up fighting in adult hood?
I got two male baby long haired teddy bear hamsters at the pet store in the same cage (there not from the same litter), when i brought them home I kept them in the same cage. When they reach adult hood will they fight?
Best answer:
Answer by nikimouse101
If you got them as babies they shouldn’t. They should learn and grow up together, so they wont be territorial. However if you were to add say another one when they reach adulthood you may find that they are territorial.
