Had 2 female Teddy Bear hamsters, 1 died. How should I act towards the last hamster?

Question by Alex Flamel: Had 2 female Teddy Bear hamsters, 1 died. How should I act towards the last hamster?
I had 2 Teddy Bear hamsters who have been together in the same cage at birth. I know that Teddy Bears usually kill eachother, but that wasn’t the case here.

The sister died today due to Wet Tail ( I’m still recovering from the sadness). Now I’m wondering what my last hamster is going through? Is she sad? Should I get another hamster ?(Teddy bear of coarse)

Thank you so much.

no, dont get another hamster. like you already know, they can kill each other (it probably wasn’t the case with you because they were close), since the new one is not known to the other one, their gonna fight

Breeding Teddy Bear Hamster For Beginners

It can be a truly wonderful experience to breed teddy bear hamsters; You need to think about a number of things before you decide to breed your hamsters:

Who are you going to sell your baby hamsters to? After only 20 – 25 days, baby hamsters can be weaned. They can begin to breed once they reach 45 days old. Once the pups are born, there is not much time before you need to find them homes. You need to know long before the time comes, where you are going to send your baby hamsters. Do not just set the babies free. They will be eaten, or they will starve. In the unlikely event that they survive, they will start to breed and will become a pest. They will have to go to their new homes sometime between 4 – 7 weeks old.

Do you have the required supplies as well as enough space to breed hamsters? You will have to have enough space and living area. At least four housing facilities are needed: one for males, one for females, one for a quarantine tank, and one for a birthing house.

Are you ready to commit to all the work needed for hamster breeding? You need to make a considerable commitment to be able to successfully breed hamsters. You need to keep the cages very clean. Your will have more expenses because your will need more bedding, more food, and more supplies overall. You also need to remember the cages, the toys, exercise wheels, and so on. Before you decide on breeding your hamsters, be sure that you are willing and able to invest in those resources.

Once you have made the decision to breed your hamsters, the following steps will get you off to a great start:

1. Purchase your hamsters from a good breeder. Find a breeder who keeps their hamsters areas clean, and provide them with enough space to live.

2. Before completing the sale, make sure to observe the hamster you are interested in closely. Is the hamster friendly? Calm? Tame? Curious? Do not pick a hamster who seem timid or one that seem overly aggressive. Temperament is hereditary, so you wouldn’t want to breed these hamsters. Instead you want a hamster that is tame. Ideally, you should try to find a breeder who handles their hamsters often and even tames them before they are sold. You will probably want to get your hamsters for breeding from a good breeder. This is because the local pet store does not usually handle their hamsters often enough.

3. Keep the male hamsters separate from the female hamster until you are ready to breed them. Females will often abuse their male partners if they are not yet ready for mating. Every four days or so, a female hamster becomes fertile. You will know when a female hamster is fertile by the way she freezes her tail up in the air when a male hamster is around.

4. Be sure to keep a pregnant or nursing hamster away from any noise. Do not handle them too often. Remember not to touch any of the babies until they are weaned. Separate the males and females soon after weaning to prevent them from breeding.

Ways to Quiet a Squeaky Hamster Wheel

About a month ago, I realised that one of my silent spinner hamster wheels was not as silent as before. Squeaking sounds came from the wheel as my roborovski hamster was running on the wheel. I was puzzled because I spent a few more bucks buying a silent spinner but it ended up making more noise than the normal ones. I Googled the possible reasons and solutions as to why my silent spinner was making these loud squeaky noises and came to realise the mistakes I have made and how it can be resolved.

Ways to quiet a squeaky hamster wheel

Use non-toxic lubricant to keep your silent spinner noise free! Strip your silent spinner and detach the axle from the wheel. Use a cotton pad, dapped with some lubricant, to wipe the axle thoroughly. Fix back the axle to your wheel and your wheel will be as good as new! Some lubricants you can use: Vegetable oil
Vaseline
Butter – wears out after awhile and you would have to apply it more frequently

If this method should fail and your hamster wheel is still squeaking, then you can try the following methods to solve your problem.
Instead of using a cotton pad to dap the axle of your hamster wheel, soak the axle in vegetable oil for an hour. Make sure that the plastic part does not get into the oil. After that, take out the axle and wipe it with a kitchen towel before fixing it back to the other parts of the wheel. This will prevent the vegetable oil from over-flowing into the wheel and getting onto your hamster.
Another method you can use is to move your hamster cage into a closet at night when you are sleeping. It will not make the wheel quiet but at least the sound will be more muffled as compared to leaving it outside of the closet. Remember to leave it slightly ajar so that your hamster will have some ventilation.
Lastly, and this should be your last resort, move your hamster cage out of your room.

These are some of the information gathered while searching for ways to quiet a squeaky hamster wheel. In the process of doing so, I have also came across 2 factors that might have caused your wheel to become squeaky and how you can prevent it.

Here are some of the reasons why your hamster wheels become squeaky and how you can prevent it.

Rusting of axle I have read in forums and some ‘online answers’ advising hamster owners to use vinegar to rinse their hamster’s toys to remove odour. This is an excellent method to remove odour but vinegar will oxidise the metal and cause it to rust. Once it rusts, the process will be irreversible. So my advice is to remove the axle from the wheel before rinsing it with vinegar and water. Then make sure it is dry before attaching the axel back to the wheel.
Wheels being used for a long time Because hamsters run a lot, the axle might get worn out in the long run. This wear and tear is caused by friction and can be prevented by lubricating your wheel frequently with the recommended lubricants mentioned above.

Conclusion

In my article, I mentioned 4 Ways to quiet a squeaky hamster wheel:

Lubricate using cotton pad
Lubricate by soaking
Leave your hamster cage in closet at night
Move hamster cage out of room

I have also mentioned the 2 causes of ending up with squeaky hamster wheels and how to prevent them:

Rusting of axle
Wheels used for a long time

I hope you have learned something new from my article and I want to emphasize that the lubricant use MUST be non-toxic. This is because the lubricant might get onto your hamster’s wheel and the consequences will be fatal if it ingests it. Another thing is, prevention is better than cure. So before your wheel becomes all squeaky and noisy, wipe the axle with a cotton pad soaked with oil. This will allow you to have longer lasting silent wheels. Wishing you and your hamster happiness!

How to Select the Best Hamster Cage

Are you ready to take home your newest pet hamster? Did you already purchase a hamster cage for your pet before bringing it home? Well, before buying a pet hamster, it is important that you already got the best cage for your hamster. Remember that your pet needs to live in a stress-free environment in order for it to stay happy and remain healthy. Getting the right cage is a great way to make your hamster feel comfortable, happy and contented.

There are many kinds of hamster cage that you can find in pet stores. Hamster cages are available in different styles, color and size. In selecting the best hamster cage for your pet, here are several tips that you should follow.
1.) Ideal size
Find out what breed your hamster is and how big it is. Depending on the type of hamster, some hamsters can be smaller than the others if it is quite small then you can find a much smaller cage compared to the bigger ones for large hamsters. However, make sure that the cage is not very small for your pet. Dwarf hamster should be placed in small or moderate-sized hamster cages. You can purchase a cage with the size of ½ feet in floor area and 1 foot tall. On the other hand, golden hamsters certainly would require a larger place to live in.
2.) Clean and spacious cage
Some cages already carry a lot of accessories inside which sometimes make it looked cramped. Hamsters love to roam and run around so it is essential to have a spacious and clean cage without unneeded accessories. Some objects might hurt your hamster so make sure to get rid off it. You should also choose a cage that is easy to clean and with less attached objects.
3.) Safety and security
Another essential factor to consider when selecting a cage is the design which can be harmful or unsafe to your pet. Some cages are barred and have small spaces to protect a hamster from slipping out of the hamster cage. You have to pick out carefully from the various variety of barred cages because some hamsters are very small and may incidentally slip or get stuck in spaces between bars. It is also recommended to choose aquarium or plastic modular cages.
4.) Ventilation
Breathing air is also essential for hamsters to remain healthy hence it is essential to purchase a cage with proper ventilation. Proper ventilation implies having sufficient air enter inside the cage to avoid getting your hamster suffocated.

Obey all the tips mentioned so that you can pick out the best hamster cage where your hamster can live in and remain happy and healthy.

When is it OK to Touch Newborn Hamsters – Why You Should Not Touch Them Before 3 to 4 Weeks

Experienced hamster owners recommend that it is OK to Touch Newborn Hamsters 3 to 4 weeks after they are born. The reason Why you should not touch the newborn hamsters before 3 to 4 weeks into their birthday is simple: Scent.

Why you should not touch them before 3 to 4 weeks?

This is because mother hamsters identify their babies by their unique scent. When you touch them, you will leave a scent on them and their mom will not be able to recognize them and will not feed or take care of them. This will be fatal for the babies because the mother hamster may end up eating them or will leave them out of her nest and will not feed or keep them warm.

If you need to handle the hamster babies before they wean, use a pair of clean and non-abrasive gloves because baby hamsters have very sensitive skin. Do this only if you have to because this will increase the risk of your baby hamsters being abandoned or eaten by their mother.

3 to 4 weeks is the time when newborn baby hamsters wean and it is only safe to touch them after that. The reason why you should not touch the newborn hamsters before they wean is because you will take away the unique scent their mom recognize them by.

I hope you have learned something new from my article and I want to emphasize that you should touch your newborn hamsters, with a pair of gloves, only if you have to do so. Wishing you and your hamster happiness!
